@@@@@It roused a new kind of terror in them, drove them on more quickly than was bearableThey felt as though they blundered through a forest, but the forest was not solidIt weaved and swayed, rustled against their limbs, was soft and yielding, and therefore nauseousThey were afraid to let the man in front move too far away, for they could not see more than two or three yards, and so they dogged at each other's heels, the grass whipping nastily into their facesEvery now and then a cloud of gnats would be disturbed and flicker tantalizingly about them, goading their flash with a dozen tiny bitesThere were many spiders in the field, and the webs kept trickling across their faces and hands, lashing them forward in a minor frenzyPollen and bits of grass teased their exposed skin
Martinez led the way like an arrow shot across the fieldMost of the time the grass was too tall for him to see, but he directed himself by the sun, never pausing for a momentIt took them only twenty minutes to cross the valley, and then after a short break they trudged over the hills againHere, the tall grass was welcome, for they grasped tufts of it to aid their ascent, and slowed their fall by clutching it on the downslopes of the hillsThe sun continued to beat on them
Their first fear of being observed by enemy troops had ebbed in the physical demands of the march, but a new and subtler terror began to obsess themThe land extended so far, was so completely silent, that they became acutely conscious of its unexplored weight, its somnolent brooding resistanceThey remembered a rumor that natives had once lived in this portion of the island, and had died decades ago in a plague of scrub typhus, the survivors moving to another islandUntil now they had never thought about the natives except to miss their labor, but in the vast buzzing silence of the sun and the hills the men forced themselves onward in nervous spasms, halting and starting, their limbs quivering with exertionMartinez led them at a cruel pace as if pursuedEven more than the others, he was awed by the thought of the men who had lived on this island and diedIt seemed sacrilegious to him to move through this empty land disturbing the long untrampled earth
Croft experienced it in a different wayThe land was foreign to him, and spawned a deep instinctive excitement at the thought that no one had trod this earth for many yearsHe had always known land well; he knew by heart every rock outcropping on every hill for miles about his father's ranch, and this country, unexplored, appealed to him deeplyEach new vista that the summit of a hill might furnish him was gratifyingIt was all his, all terrain which he could patrol with the platoon

made her a very creditable and tolerably cheerful-looking Mrs
Price, coming abroad with a fine family of children, feeling a little
respite of her weekly cares, and only discomposed if she saw her
boys run into danger, or Rebecca pass by with a flower in her hat
In chapel they were obliged to divide, but MrCrawford took care
not to be divided from the female branch; and after chapel he still
continued with them, and made one in the family party on the
rampartsPrice took her weekly walk on the ramparts every fine Sunday
throughout the year, always going directly after morning service and
staying till dinner-timeIt was her public place: there she met her
acquaintance, heard a little news, talked over the badness of the Portsmouth
servants, and wound up her spirits for the six days ensuing
Thither they now went; MrCrawford most happy to consider
    358
    Mansfield Park
the Miss Prices as his peculiar charge; and before they had been
there long, somehow or other, there was no saying how, Fanny could
not have believed it, but he was walking between them with an arm
of each under his, and she did not know how to prevent or put an
end to itIt made her uncomfortable for a time, but yet there were
enjoyments in the day and in the view which would be felt
The day was uncommonly lovelyIt was really March; but it was
April in its mild air, brisk soft wind, and bright sun, occasionally
clouded for a minute; and everything looked so beautiful under the
influence of such a sky, the effects of the shadows pursuing each
other on the ships at Spithead and the island beyond, with the evervarying
hues of the sea, now at high water, dancing in its glee and
dashing against the ramparts with so fine a sound, produced altogether
such a combination of charms for Fanny, as made her gradually
almost careless of the circumstances under which she felt them
Nay, had she been without his arm, she would soon have known
that she needed it, for she wanted strength for a two hours’ saunter
of this kind, coming, as it generally did, upon a week’s previous
inactivityFanny was beginning to feel the effect of being debarred
from her usual regular exercise; she had lost ground as to health
since her being in Portsmouth; and but for MrCrawford and the
beauty of the weather would soon have been knocked up now
The loveliness of the day, and of the view, he felt like herselfThey
often stopt with the same sentiment and taste, leaning against the
wall, some minutes, to look and admire; and considering he was
not Edmund, Fanny could not but allow that he was sufficiently
open to the charms of nature, and very well able to express his admiration
She had a few tender reveries now and then, which he
    could sometimes take advantage of to look in her face without detection;
and the result of these looks was, that though as bewitching
as ever, her face was less blooming than it ought to beShe said she
was very well, and did not like to be supposed otherwise; but take it
all in all, he was convinced that her present residence could not be
comfortable, and therefore could not be salutary for her, and he was
growing anxious for her being again at Mansfield, where her own
happiness, and his in seeing her, must be so much grea

She would do it—she would do it now
The harsh downpour of the rain on the roof and the windows, and the whistling, roaring wind
outside were interrupted by a blinding streak of lightning followed by a deafening crack of thunder
“Jean Pierre Fontaine” wept silently as he knelt beside the bed, his face inches from his
woman’s, his tears falling on the cold flesh of her armShe was dead, and the note by her white
rigid hand said it all: Maintenant nous deux sommes libres, mon amourShe from the terrible pain, he from the price demanded by the
monseigneur, a price he had not described to her, but one she knew was too horrible to payHe had
known for months that his woman had ready access to pills that would end her life quickly if her
living became unendurable; he had frequently, at times frantically, searched for them but he had
never found themNow he knew why as he stared at the small tin of her favorite pastilles, the
harmless droplets of licorice she had popped laughingly into her mouth for years
“Be thankful, mon cher, they might be caviar or those expensive drugs the rich indulge in!”
They were not caviar but they were drugs, lethal drugsThe nurse! She had come out of her room, but she could not see his woman! Fontaine
pushed himself up from the bed, wiped his eyes as best he could, and hurried to the doorHe
opened it, stunned by the sight of the woman; she stood directly in front of him, her arm raised, the
knuckles of her hand arcing forward to knock
“I believe we startled each other Jean Pierre slipped out, rapidly closing the door behind him
“Regine is finally asleep,” he whispered, bringing his forefinger to his lips“This terrible storm has
kept her up most of the night
“But it is sent from heaven for us—for you—isn’t it? There are times when I think the

“I will be in a matter of minutes,” replied Fontaine, heading for the table where his killing

    @@@@@Sometimes it felt a little
scaryMostly it felt pretty goddam wonderful
I did most of my drawing upstairs, in the room I'd
come to think of as Little PinkThe only view
from there was of the Gulf and that flat horizonline,
but I had a digital camera and I took
pictures of other things sometimes, printed them
out, clipped them to my easel (which Jack and I
turned so the strong afternoon light would strike
across the paper), and drew that stuffThere was
no rhyme or reason to those snapshots, although
when I told Kamen this in an e-mail, he responded
that the unconscious mind writes poetry if it's
    left alone

I drew my mailboxI drew the stuff growing around
Big Pink, then had Jack buy me a book - Common
Plants of the Florida Coast - so I could put names
to my picturesNaming seemed to help - to add
power, somehowBy then I was on my second box of
colored pencilsand I had a third waiting in
the wingsThere was aloe vera; sea lavender with
its bursts of tiny yellow flowers (each possessing
a tiny heart of deepest violet); inkberry with its
long spade-shaped leaves; and my favorite, sophora,
which Common Plants of the Florida Coast also
identified as necklace-bush, for the tiny podlike
necklaces that grow on its branchesThere were
shells everywhere, an eternity of shells just
within my limited walking distanceDuma Key was
made of shells, and soon I'd brought back dozens
And almost every night when the sun went down, I
drew the sunsetI knew sunsets were a cliché, and
that's why I did themIt seemed to me that if I
could break through that wall of been-there-donethat
even once, I might be getting somewhereSo I
piled up picture after picture, and none of them
looked like muchI tried overlaying Venus Yellow

didn't workThe sullen furnace-glow was always
missingEach sunset was only a penciled piece of
shit where the colors said I'm trying to tell you
the horizon's on fireYou could undoubtedly have
bought forty better ones at any sidewalk art show
on a Saturday in Sarasota or Venice BeachI saved
some of those drawings, but I was so disgusted
with most of them that I threw them away
One evening after another bunch of failures, once
again watching the top arc of the sun disappear,
leaving that flush of Halloween color trailing
behind, I thought: It was the shipThat was what
